1. Switzerland
1.1. History The origin of Switzerland dates back to 1291, when Medieval cities are rarely developed on the same three cantons (Schwyz, Uri and Unterwald) signed a site as the Roman town. They generally cover only charter aligning the newly-founded conglomerate a portion of it. But at Nyon, the medieval town continued to occupy the same space, accounting for against the Habsburg dynasty. Over the centuries, the limited number of vestiges of the Roman town other cantons joined this alliance and, in 1848, they (parts of the basilica and the amphitheatre only). drew up a Constitution, laying the foundations of the modern federal state. Switzerland today is made Nyon was a prosperous town in the middle Ages. up of 26 cantons which all have their own cantonal The Castle, the fortifications (very visible all along laws and separate tribunals, but there is a Federal the Promenade des Vieilles Murailles) and St Marie’s Court of Justice which can overrule them. gate essentially remain from this period. But few medieval buildings have been preserved intact such as the old Notre Dame Church and the Caesar Tower.
At the end of the 18th century, the town enjoyed a big economic upturn, producing a “property boom”. This explains why the current town has few very old houses, but a remarkable ensemble from The Lake Geneva area the last quarter of the 18th century.
Between lakes, mountains and countryside, the Country of Vaud (today’s Lake Geneva area) has a long history of which much still remains: archaeological sites, amphitheatres, castles, churches and monuments.

The market square is found in the middle of the town on the lakeside and is in fact only an enlarged secondary road, perpendicular to the Grand-Rue.
Although there are no longer remains of the city walls which, out of necessity, surrounded the town in the Middle Ages, the castle, strongpoint of its defences, still exists.
1.1.1. Nyon, the old Roman town
Nyon is a military colony of Roman foundation dating from about 50 BC. It sits on the summit of a hill on the road linking Geneva to Lausanne. The streets of the upper town still reveal the Roman checkerboard plan, especially the Grand-Rue, site of the ancient cardo maximus.
